Start with the symptom

What is the system actually doing?

Do not start with “the sprinklers are broken.” Start with the exact zone, whether the controller activates it, whether water appears somewhere unexpected, and whether pressure changes across the system.

Head problem

Broken, buried, tilted, clogged or spraying the wrong direction.

Zone problem

One area will not start, will not stop, or has noticeably weaker pressure.

Control problem

Schedule, wiring, controller or multiple-zone symptoms suggest a broader diagnosis.

Kaufman operating context

Repair the system, then operate it intelligently.

Water-provider rules can differ by service area, so confirm current watering restrictions with the utility serving the property. Regardless of schedule, a head spraying pavement, persistent runoff or a leak while the system is off is a repair or adjustment clue worth documenting.

Before the call

Run the system zone by zone if it is safe to do so. Write down the zone number, symptom, where water appears, and whether the controller shows that zone active.

Quick inspection

Six clues worth collecting.

  • Zone number and controller status.
  • Broken, leaning or buried heads.
  • Water pooling when the system is off.
  • Overspray onto driveway, sidewalk or street.
  • Recent digging, fence, landscaping or construction work.
  • Weak pressure in one zone versus the whole system.
What to ask

Make the repair explain itself.

“What failed, and why?”

Component failure, impact damage, wiring, pressure and layout problems lead to different fixes.

“What should I change after the repair?”

Ask about controller schedule, runtime, head alignment and whether coverage or runoff needs adjustment.
